Expansion / passenger cap
- 2026 The UK government approved raising London City's annual passenger cap from 6.5 million to 9 million, and allowed three extra flights in the first half hour of weekday operations. The airport's separate request to extend Saturday operating hours (it currently closes at 12:30pm Saturday) was rejected. (source)
- 2026 (ongoing) London City set out a strategy to reach 9 million passengers by around 2031, relying on larger, more fuel-efficient aircraft to grow capacity within existing movement limits rather than through longer opening hours. (source)
Construction / larger aircraft
- 2 March to 17 May 2026 London City ran a public consultation seeking CAA approval for a shallower ("re-fleeting") approach procedure that would let the larger Airbus A320neo operate at the airport. If approved, the change would take effect in January 2027 at the earliest. (source)
- March 2025 An Embraer E195-E2 operated by Helvetic Airways landed at London City for the first time, becoming the largest certified aircraft to serve the airport at that point. (source)
Security rule changes
- January 2026 London City lifted the 100ml cabin liquids limit after installing new CT scanners: passengers can carry up to 2 litres of liquids, no longer need a separate toiletries bag, and can leave laptops/electronics in hand baggage. The airport reported roughly a 30% throughput increase in early trials. (source)
New routes / airlines
- Summer 2026 BA CityFlyer, which operates around 24 destinations from London City, added leisure routes including Palma de Mallorca and San Sebastián, with Barcelona and Thessaloniki also joining its network. (source)
